Lang Giang is a mountainous district in the northeast of Bac Giang province, which is 10 kilometers from the heart of Bac Giang city. The district covers an area of 246.06 square kilometers, which is divided into 21 administrative units including 19 communes and 2 towns with the total population of over 20,000 people living in 8 ethnic groups of the Kinh, Tay, Nung, San Diu, San Chi, Cao Lan, Muong and Hoa, 87 percent of whom are the Kinh people. The National Highway 1A (Hanoi-Lang Son route), the railways of Hanoi-Lang Son, Kep- Quang Ninh and Kep- Luu Xa running across the provincial and district-level routes to the residential areas create a smooth traffic network in Lang Giang district, which facilitates economic development and cultural exchange. Thanks to its favorable geographical location, Lang Giang is among 4 districts and city in the province defined as the key socio-economic development areas (Viet Yen, Yen Dung and Lang Giang districts and Bac Giang city).
Lang Giang district has 225 relics including 105 ranked relics (19 relics ranked at ministerial level and 86 others ranked at provincial level). Some outstanding relic sites include the tourism site of the communal house, temple and Chu Nguyen pagoda (in Voi town), the relic cluster of Da Huong (camphor tree) attached to the communal house and pagoda of Tien Luc commune, Quat Lam pagoda (in Dai Lam commune), Tu Mau temple (in Xuan Huong commune), Dai Phu pagoda (in Voi town), Lien Xuong communal house (in Xuong Lam commune), the communal house and pagoda of Duong Quan Ha village (in Duong Duc commune), Hong Phuc pagoda (in Kep town) and Phu Lao temple (in Dao My commune). Lang Giang is maintaining the local featured art clubs such as Then Soong singing in Huong Son commune, Quan ho (love-duet) singing in Phu Do residential group in Voi town, Cheo singing club in An Ha commune and violin club in Thai Dao commune.
Lang Giang is a land of rich revolutionary tradition, which is famous for Can Tram- Ho Cat- Xuong Giang victory in the resistance war against Ming invaders in the middle of 15th century. Over the time, Lang Giang has had many changes in administrative boundary and name in each historical period; however, the people of all ethnic groups in Lang Giang district have promoted the patriotic tradition and maintained their resilience and bravery in the fights against foreign invaders while proving their industriousness and creativity in production and doing business.
Promoting the heroic tradition, Lang Giang also early grasped the light of the Marxism-Leninism and the revolutionary proletarian pathway lead by Nguyen Ai Quoc. The party committee of Phu Lang Thuong was established in late 1938, which was considered one party committee of Bac Giang province leading the revolutionary movement in the province.
The revolutionary movement in Phu Lang Thuong rapidly grew during the years protecting the nation of Viet Minh front to consolidate the revolutionary bases and seize power.
In the 1945 August Revolution, the people of Phu Lang Giang (now Lang Giang district) joint hands the people in the whole country fought to defeat the colonist and feudalism to open up a new era for the workers and gain independence for the nation becoming the first country of people’s democracy the Southeast Asia.
On March 25, 1948, the State President issued the Decree No 148-SL on rejecting the nouns of “phủ”, “châu”, “quận” and (former administrative units in Vietnam, which were relevant to districts) and replacing them with the noun “huyện” (district). Hence, Phu Lang Giang was renamed into Lang Giang district.
In the resistance wars against French and American invaders and the wars to protect Vietnamese border gates, the military troops and people of Lang Giang district under leadership of the party committee at all levels joint hands to protect the nation while actively participating in production becoming strong home front for the military. This land was famous for the movements of soldiers’ mother association, capable women and building good working groups. Ten thousands of outstanding people of Lang Giang joint the resistant wars who bravely fought and made great contributions. Particularly, 2,745 people in this land devoted their lives for the nation, 1598 people became invalids, 685 people became sick soldiers and many people were imprisoned by the colonists. More than 200 mothers have been awarded and bestowed “Heroic Vietnamese mother” title. 12 collectives and 4 individuals were rewarded the title “Hero of the People's Armed Forces” by the Party Committee and State. The district is also the home to thousands of national contributors. Several lands and people were named in the history of the nation and Lang Giang district, who become the symbols of the tenacious and brave fighting spirit and the solidarity of the soldiers and people and the everlasting pride of the party committee and people of Lang Giang.
Regarding the socio-economic development, which was comprehensively and deeply evaluated at the 4th session of the 20th meeting of the people’s council of Lang Giang district in the 2021-2026 tenure, many sectors have gained dramatic development. The production value of the key economic sectors increased by 27.3 percent, of which the agro- forestry and fishery sector increased by 2.35 percent, the industrial and construction sector jumped 47.9 percent and service sector increased by 12.6 percent. Some tasks have made breakthroughs such as planning, urban development and development of traffic infrastructure. Specially, the district people’s committee has directed to remove obstacles to facilitate production of the enterprises, strengthen investment promotion to attract investors to the locality.
Besides, the district has paid attention to speeding up the land clearance progress for the industrial development projects. The socio-cultural sectors have also developed with effective social welfare policies. The people’s living has been kept stable when the national defense and security are secured.
Lang Giang has been recognized a new-style rural district since 2019. In order to effectively implement the national target program on building new-style rural areas in 2020-2025 period, the levels and sectors of Lang Giang district have paid high attention to the direction and leadership with specific plans, schedules and task assignment for the members of the Steering Committee for building new-style rural areas. The district aims at “Tapping the self-resilience and aspiration to build Lang Giang into an advanced new-style district by 2025 and meet the criteria of the fourth-tier city in 2030”. In addition, it is targeted for rapid and sustainable development of Kep town and strives to reach the criteria of the fourth-tier city by 2025. The district will also implement the plan on improving the criteria of a new-style rural district and building advanced and exemplary new-style rural communes in 2020-2025 period.
After 2 years, the district currently has 4 out of 19 communes recognized as advanced new-style rural communes and 39 out of 95 villages meeting criteria of exemplary new-style rural areas. Besides, the district has paid attention to urban development. The district has allocated budget for implementation of the construction planning projects and increasing the detailed planning coverage rate. In order to reach the target to build Lang Giang district into an advanced new-style rural district by 2025 and meet the criteria of a fourth-tier city in 2030, the district people’s committee has drastically directed the related agencies, units and people’s committee of the communes and towns to implement the assigned tasks in the implementation plans of the resolutions of the district party committee to create an important driving force to boost and fulfill the socio-economic development goals of the district in 2021-2025 period.
It is believed that Lang Giang district will gain dramatic results in all fields, in the emulative movements and in the cause of building an advanced new-style rural district thanks to appropriate leadership of the provincial Party Committee, the district party committee and joining hands of the whole political system; thereby heightening the status of the district to deserve the heroic tradition of the land of Lang Giang in the renovation period.
